• (?) Replaces a completely indecipherable word
• ? Immediately after a word means part of word is readable, but the whole word is a guess because it is not legible to be certain
• * Replaces a letter when the rest of the word is legible.  Some parts are faded or smudged; it&39;s easy to make out certain letters, but can&39;t make an educated guess at the word
